The rumor mill has already decided quite firmly?that the new iPhone will be announced on Sept. 12, and will sport a bigger screen and smaller dock connector. But a new rumor suggests that new connector won't be limited to the iPhone ? every iOS device will be updated with one, as early as this fall.
The original?and venerable?30-pin connector that has been on iOS devices since before they were called iOS devices. It was introduced with the third-generation iPod, back in 2004, and has received only minor tweaks since then. The new one, on the other hand, is rumored to?be much smaller, yet able to handle more data and power ? something any iOS device would benefit from. It would also free up room inside the phone for more?battery and circuitry.
The unnamed source told iMore that it the new connector would be replacing the old one across the board, with no exceptions: iPhone, iPod touch, iPod Nano, the rumored iPad Mini, and even the latest iPad.
The iPhone and iPods are due for a refresh anyway, but what about the third-generation iPad, which only came out a few months ago? If Apple refreshed it now, it might cause confusion and?anger, so maybe it won't get the new port until next spring.
A tidal wave of accessories should follow the new connector's debut, as practically every case and skin will require an update. There will likely also?be adapters available, as many stereos and charging systems have the old connector hard-wired in and therefore impossible to swap out.
It makes some sense: All those devices need to switch over some time, so?why not get it over with, like jumping into cold water rather than wading?
