Syrian forces strike Aleppo as West pressures Assad

Syrian forces blitzed areas in and around the northern city of Aleppo on Friday, activists said, as Western powers sought to tighten the screws on embattled President Bashar al-Assad.

France said it backed a partial no-fly zone over Syria, where the regime is intensifying its attacks from the air as it battles to stamp out rebel strongholds in Aleppo and pockets of resistance in the capital Damascus.

New envoy Lakhdar Brahimi was due to meet UN chief Ban Ki-moon later Friday on the 17-month conflict that has escalated from a peaceful uprising against Assad's rule into an increasing bloody civil war.

France and Germany said they are pushing for UN Security Council action on the humanitarian crisis as the number of refugees soars above 200,000, while over 2.5 million are in need of aid inside the country, according to the UN.

The West has ramped up the pressure as the fighting grinds bloodily on into its 18th month, with the United States and Britain warning Damascus of possible action if it resorts to its chemical weapons arsenal.

Syria's staunchest ally Iran meanwhile said it will submit a proposal for ending the conflict at a Non-Aligned Movement summit next week, saying it included "all parties" but gave no further details.

Activists reported heavy shelling by Syrian forces on several districts of Aleppo, scene of the fiercest fighting since the conflict first entangled the commercial and manufacturing hub a month ago.

Several houses were destroyed, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, also reporting a bombardment on the town of Aazaz to the north.

At least 50 unidentified bodies were also found shot dead in the last 24 hours, notably in Aleppo and Damascus, it said, amid proliferating reports of summary executions.

Rebels said they were digging in for a war of attrition in Aleppo, where the regime had warned last month of "the mother of all battles" for the city.

"We don't have enough weapons, they (the Syrian army) don't have enough men," said Abu Haidar, a rebel fighter in the southwestern Saif al-Dawla district.

Both the government and opposition forces say attacks on Aleppo province are aimed at cutting arms supply routes to the rebels in Syria's second city, once a thriving metropolis of 2.7 million people but now largely in ruins.

Rebels claimed earlier this week to control 60 percent of Aleppo but the regime has dismissed the claims and said Thursday the army had recaptured three Christian neighbourhoods, where residents are largely pro-Assad.

Amnesty International warned Thursday that civilians were facing "horrific" violence in Aleppo as the regime waged indiscriminate attacks.

A UN panel earlier this month said the regime was guilty of crimes against humanity during the conflict, while also holding the rebels to task for committing war crimes, although to a lesser extent.

Regime forces also pounded several areas of the largely rebel-held province of Idlib in the northwest, the Observatory said, while fierce fighting erupted between rebels and troops in the central province of Hama.

Government troops have also waged ferocious onslaughts on the southern outskirts of Damascus over the past two days in what activists said was a renewed bid to crush the insurgency in the capital "once and for all".

n Friday, activists reported that troops had stormed and shelled several areas including the town of Daraya which lies to the south of Damascus.

"Fear is everywhere," said a Damascus resident and anti-regime activist who gave her name as Samara.

A total of 149 people were killed on Thursday alone, including 14 children, the Observatory said.

Around 24,500 people have been killed since the uprising erupted in March last year -- with August already the bloodiest month, according to Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman.

The UN puts the death toll at more than 17,000.

The Local Coordination Committees, a large activist network, said meanwhile that prominent Syrian film producer Orwa Nyrabia had disappeared and was feared arrested, but its report could not be confirmed independently.

Amid a flurry of diplomatic moves on the crisis, France said it would consider backing a partial no-fly zone, a proposal being studied by Washington, although US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said Wednesday it was "not on the frontburner right now."

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian however warned that shutting all of Syria's air space would mean "going to war" and would require a willing international coalition that has not yet materialised.

Ahead of the Brahimi-Ban meeting, Syria's deputy foreign minister Faisal Muqdad said Damascus was ready to work with the new envoy and voiced hope he could pave the way for "national dialogue."

Another minister said this week the regime was "ready to discuss" Assad's departure as part of any negotiated solution but the West is insisting the man who has ruled Syria with an iron fist for 12 years must go now.

The Security Council has so far failed to agree how to tackle the crisis because of divisions between the West and Syria's traditional allies in Bejing and Moscow, and last weekend wrapped up its troubled observer mission.

Neighbouring Lebanon was rattled again Friday by new fighting between rival pro-and anti-Damascus communities in the northern port city of Tripoli, with 13 people killed since Monday, adding to fears of a spillover of the Syria conflict.

(AP) ? American nuns rebuked by the Vatican for tolerating dissent say they're willing to hold talks with church leaders but won't compromise their mission.

The organization for Catholic sisters made the announcement Friday at the end of their national assembly in St. Louis.

The Vatican had said the Leadership Conference of Women Religious had violated church teaching on issues including the all-male priesthood, birth control and homosexuality. It also said the group had been nearly silent on abortion.

The nuns group says the assessment was flawed.

The Vatican rebuke of the sisters was released last April and sparked an outpouring of support for the women from parishes to Capitol Hill. The Leadership Conference represents most of the 57,000 American nuns.

The Vatican has appointed three American bishops to overhaul the organization.

Toddler calls 3-D-printed medical exoskeleton her 'magic arms'

7 hrs.

The field of prosthetics is perhaps the best example of humanity and technology coming together. For proof, consider this video of 4-year-old Emma, born with a muscular condition that prohibited her from moving her arms freely ? until modern technology built a pair of "magic arms" customized just for her.

Emma's condition,?called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, affects her joints and muscles, making her arms extremely weak. There are devices that can aid in limb movement for people affected by this and similar conditions, but historically they have not been designed for young children. One such device is the Wilmington Robotic Exoskeleton, or WREX, a set of powered joints that assists in natural movement.

For Emma, the machine was very empowering, but its bulk and weight (it is normally attached to a wheelchair) meant her ability to use it in everyday life was very limited. So Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, which treated her, looked into creating a custom version. They used a Stratasys 3-D printer to create a special harness and fittings out of strong ABS plastic (the same used in LEGO bricks).

Whitney Sample, a research design engineer at Nemours, describes the advantage of the printed parts in the video, recently published by Stratasys:

This is one of those industries that matches perfectly with 3-D printing, additive manufacturing, because we need custom everything. We can answer a need in a heartbeat.?I don't have to worry about lead time to machine something, order supplies. I can just basically go back to my program and print out another one.

Emma herself outgrew her first one and they simply printed out another better suited to her new size.?The process has proven effective and popular: Since it was first tried with Emma, more than a dozen kids with similar conditions have been given custom WREX builds.

3-D printing is also useful in other areas of prosthetic treatment; in fact, it could be said that it is revolutionizing the field, and is in the process of being applied to the replication of many other body parts.?Artificial limbs can be made and adjusted with more speed and precision than ever before, turning the once?one-size-fits-all prosthesis into a more?patient-centered treatment.

Tales from the Training Room: The 24-Hour Lock-In

Two weekends ago, New Jersey-based pro fighter Anthony Montanaro was stuck in hell.? He and over twenty other people were confined to the matted-space within the four walls of a massive gym, and every hour for twenty-four hours straight, all were subjected to workouts of varying length and composition.? There were seven-minute wrestling matches.? Rope climbs.? Box jumps and pull-ups.? The works.? No sleep was allowed, and men broke, both physically and mentally.? Yet, despite being driven to the brink of madness, Montanaro pushed through, and when the last workout was done and they were all permitted to leave, he was stronger because if it.? Such was the magic of the 24-hour lock-in.

?

"A 24-hour lock-in is your worst nightmare amplified by ten," says the 25-year-old Montanaro, who, with a shaved head and the tattoo of an armored pitbull on a chest, looks every bit the MMA fighter archetype.? "It's twenty-four hours straight of nonstop training, where every hour on the hour you have a different workout that could be five minutes to a half-hour long.? The whole purpose is to break you, to make you hit the wall as soon as possible.? It's all mental toughness.? It's a nightmare."

The Rhino Wrestling Club in Morganville, N.J., was where this nightmare unfolded; the day began Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. and went until 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning.? It was rigorous, with the intense physical activity and sleep-deprivation aspects making it more akin to what a soldier would do for Special Forces training than anything else.? "I don't know if they stole the idea from Navy SEAL-type stuff, but it was ridiculous," says Montanaro.? "It was kind of like the whole Marine or Army crucible-type stuff, know what I mean?"

To prepare for fights, fighters go to great lengths to make themselves like steel.? There's roadwork, padwork, grappling, and as we've seen on "The Ultimate Fighter", conditioning drills that can involve things like flipping giant tires and swinging sledgehammers.? With a fight coming up in the next few months, Montanaro is no different.? But what benefits are derived from the lock-in?? Clearly, the limits of the conditioning of the participants are pushed, but is there something more??

"Honestly, just complete mental toughness," says Montanaro. ?"You get to a point where you don't think you can go anymore and then you have to go.? It's insane.? It's probably the worst training I've ever done.? I was more nervous for that than any fight I've ever had to do."

What of the necessities of human existence?? "They have a bathroom, of course," says Montanaro.? "Food's included? all the food you can eat.? After your workouts, even if you weren't hungry, they stressed that you drink and eat nonstop ? just carb you up and keep you going.? Sleep, that's not encouraged at all.? They keep you awake, keep you zombified, keep you going."

Obviously, the whole endeavor was tortuous.? Was there any particular thing that Montanaro found to be the toughest?? "The toughest thing about the lock-in?? Where do I even start?? The whole damn thing.? Once you hit that first wall, that's when it's brutal.? Everything hits you all at once ? you want to sleep, you try to lay down and it's time for the next workout.? I would say around two or three in the morning, that's when it's the worst.? You know you could just leave at any point you want, but it's just that whole mental aspect."?

If one could literally leave at any time, it sounds as if the name ? a "lock-in" ? is a bit of a misnomer.? "It was going to be a complete lock-in, but it was so damn hot, there was no way they could do something like that.? We would've kicked the doors down.? There was no way."

With door unlocked and retreat requiring only an exit through the door, did anyone quit?? "No, surprisingly enough, no one quit.? And the craziest thing was there was an 11-year old kid there.? Some parent signed their kid up to do it!? It was the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.? So anytime someone wanted to quit, we'd look at this little kid.? He was our mascot."

What was the atmosphere like?? Was it all business, or was there at least some of element of fun to it?? "For the first probably like eight to ten hours, everyone was kind of feeling each other out ? you know, like, is everyone in full serious-mode or are we going to have some kind of?fun here?? Probably at night is when everyone started to get a little loopy.? Everyone started to get punchy.? The later it got into the night, everyone was just out there."

Would Montanaro go through it all again?? "Absolutely," he says without hesitation.? "In a heartbeat.? After it was done, I honestly just wanted to stay and keep going.? It's just nonstop training, no drama, no [expletive], everyone was just there to train.? If we could do it, I would love to do it every month."

A wise man once posed the question, "Do you want to be a [expletive] fighter?"? It's doubtful he'd dare ask that of Montanaro and participants of the 24-hour lock-in.

Apple to put new dock connectors on new and existing iOS devices this fall?

43 min.

The rumor mill has already decided quite firmly?that the new iPhone will be announced on Sept. 12, and will sport a bigger screen and smaller dock connector. But a new rumor suggests that new connector won't be limited to the iPhone ? every iOS device will be updated with one, as early as this fall.

The original?and venerable?30-pin connector that has been on iOS devices since before they were called iOS devices. It was introduced with the third-generation iPod, back in 2004, and has received only minor tweaks since then. The new one, on the other hand, is rumored to?be much smaller, yet able to handle more data and power ? something any iOS device would benefit from. It would also free up room inside the phone for more?battery and circuitry.

The unnamed source told iMore that it the new connector would be replacing the old one across the board, with no exceptions: iPhone, iPod touch, iPod Nano, the rumored iPad Mini, and even the latest iPad.

The iPhone and iPods are due for a refresh anyway, but what about the third-generation iPad, which only came out a few months ago? If Apple refreshed it now, it might cause confusion and?anger, so maybe it won't get the new port until next spring.

A tidal wave of accessories should follow the new connector's debut, as practically every case and skin will require an update. There will likely also?be adapters available, as many stereos and charging systems have the old connector hard-wired in and therefore impossible to swap out.

It makes some sense: All those devices need to switch over some time, so?why not get it over with, like jumping into cold water rather than wading?
