Wine, food and other pleasures: Greenberry Caf?

As a north Londoner, I felt a bit sad when I heard that Trojka in Primrose Hill was closing. It had real personality and an earthiness that's become rare in a part of London that has become self-consciously cute. Anyway, I hadn't thought about it much until I recently heard about?Greenbury Caf??which has opened on the site.

What made my ears prick up was the realisation that Morfudd Richards is the force behind the?Greenbury Caf?. Over the past couple of decades or so, Richards has been closely involved in the London restaurant scene, working at Marco Pierre White's Harvey's and for Chris Corbin and Jeremy King at The Ivy and Le Caprice (Fay Maschler's piece about her?here?reads like a potted modern history of the London restaurant scene). She went on to open Lola's in Islington in the 1990s where chefs included Juliet Peston (sister of Robert) and Hywel Jones. I lived nearby and just loved Lola's for the way it combined excellent food and drink with a warm, relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Unlike many restaurants at the time, it was never up itself.

So, I was delighted to hear about Greenbury Caf?. It's open all day and the eclectic menu takes in British delicacies (even from London), interesting global dishes (Imam Bayildi, kitchari), charcuterie and comforting classics like eggs benedict, salt beef sandwiches and steak and chips. The drinks list is equally varied, offering an array of sherries, craft beers, imaginatively chosen wines and proper grown-up soft drinks. The coffee sounds great too, using a specific blend called 'Baron' from Climpson and Sons.

For my starter I really got into the local vibe and had Stoke Newington smoked salmon with soda bread and Camden Wheat Beer (see pic above). You'd never expect it, but this turned out to be a terrific combination. My friend Neil had sea bream ceviche, passion fruit and avocado ? zingy and appetising and fabulous with Tim Adam's Fairfield Block Single Vineyard Semillon.?I stuck with fish for my main course ? roast cod, herb and olive quinoa, tamarind pur?e, and the Semillon hit the spot again. Neil chose a lamb dish from the daily specials and a glass of gutsy Jumilla.?We couldn't resist pudding, so Neil had some of Morfudd's home-made vanilla ice cream with Pedro Ximenez poured over and I had roast and raw pineapple, pain d'?pice, coconut and limeleaf sorbet (with a glass of Arneis Passito). All excellent.

Our bill came to about ?90, eating ? la carte, but they offer a prix fixe during the week for lunch and dinner: ?9.50/?11.50 for two/three courses. As it is open all day, I presume you could pop in for whatever you fancy or perhaps stay put and work your way right through the menu. Now that's a thought...

Jose Aldo-Anthony Pettis featherweight championship fight back on

Over the weekend, UFC president Dana White said featherweight champion Jose Aldo was refusing to take a fight with Anthony Pettis, the lightweight who was scheduled to fight Aldo in August. As Kevin Iole wrote, Aldo told White he didn't think Pettis had earned the title shot.

The fight is back on. Andre Pederneias, Aldo's manager, told SporTV in Brazil (with translation from our friends at Yahoo! Brazil) that Aldo will take the fight, with one condition:

?I had a meeting today (Monday) with Jos? Aldo, who said: ?I?m going to end with this clownery. People are saying that I?m running, so they are going to see who will run from who when the time comes. If you enjoy a brawl, you can buy the pay-per-view on August 3 and that's what you are going to watch because heads will roll?. At that moment I called Dana White to agree with the fight, but on one condition: after that fight, the winner gets a title shot at [lightweight]?.

White confirmed that the fight is on.

ESPN is reporting that Aldo will get his wish, and that if he beats Pettis on Aug. 3, he will get a shot at the UFC lightweight belt. Benson Henderson is currently the title holder, and will fight Gilbert Melendez in April.

This means the UFC lightweight belt has a clear path for 2013. Pettis was supposed to be the next lightweight contender, but pushed for the Aldo fight because he didn't want to wait until the Henderson and Melendez fight was over.

Are you looking forward to seeing Aldo possibly fight for the lightweight belt? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Matt Riddle cut from the UFC after second positive test for marijuana

Last week, Matt Riddle talked about how he mended fences with UFC brass over his positive test for marijuana. This week? He tested positive again and lost his job. According to MMA Junkie, Riddle tested positive for marijuana after his UFC on Fuel 7 bout with Che Mills, and was then cut from the UFC. Riddle also tested positive at UFC 149.

While it's true that Riddle has a medical marijuana card in Nevada, he knew full well that the UFC tested for the drug. Whether that drug should be banned is not the point. It is, Riddle knows it's banned, and Riddle broke the rules.

If your boss banned red shirts for no reason at all and you were suspended for wearing your favorite red shirt to work, are you going to wear it again? Yes, you can talk about how your boss is crazy for banning red shirts and work to change his mind on red shirts, but you can't wear the shirt and expect to slide by.

It's also important for UFC fighters to walk the line these days as the promotion looks to trim their roster. UFC president Dana White recently noted that they have approximately 100 fighters to trim from their roster. Riddle made it too easy for them to pick his name.

UPDATE: The UFC released a statement on Riddle's release, which reads in full:

Matthew Riddle tested positive for marijuana metabolites following his bout at UFC on FUEL TV 7 in London, England on February 16, 2013. This is Riddle?s second failed drug test for marijuana within the past seven months. Riddle previously failed a post-fight drug test due to marijuana following his UFC 149 victory over Chris Clements.

As such, the UFC organization is exercising its right to terminate Riddle for breach of his obligations under his Promotional Agreement as well as the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy. The UFC organization has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents. The outcome of the bout against Che Mills was changed to a no contest and the results of the positive test will be reported to the official Association of Boxing Commissions MMA record-keeper.

Cyclone intensifies, Australia's iron ore mines brace

PERTH (Reuters) - A powerful cyclone headed for Australia's Port Hedland, that has brought half the world's seaborne-traded iron ore to a halt, has intensified and is set to make landfall late on Wednesday, threatening to flood inland mine operations and rail links.

Weather warnings extend as far as 500 kms (310 miles) inland to the massive mining camps and towns of Tom Price, Mt Newman and Nullagine, operated by Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and Fortescue Metals Group.

Hardest-hit areas could receive up to 600 millimeters, or 2 feet, of rain in 24 hours, said the Bureau of Meteorology.

Such extensive flooding threatens to submerge hundreds of kilometers (miles) of rail lines owned by the miners and used to transport ore to the ports.

"Extreme weather preparations continue across our mining operations in anticipation of the cyclone moving further inland," BHP said in a statement emailed to Reuters. "Additional operations will be suspended if necessary."

The Pilbara, a sparsely populated and inhospitable outback part of Australia, is the world's largest source of iron ore.

Australia's three main iron ore ports, Port Hedland, Dampier and Cape Lambert, were closed on Monday. Offshore oil and gas fields have also been shut down.

Australia's biggest iron ore miner Rio Tinto plans shipments of 260 million tonnes of ore through Dampier and Cape Lambert this year.

Australian & New Zealand Bank estimates iron ore shipments with a total value of A$500 million ($510.58 million) have so far been sidelined due to port closures.

Rusty early on Wednesday strengthened to a category four storm -- on a scale of one-to five. The bureau predicts the storm will come ashore just to the east of Port Hedland.

"This is a large tropical cyclone and its slow movement is likely to result in an extended period of destructive winds near the track, with rainfall that is heavier than that associated with a typical system," the weather office said.

BHP, Fortescue and Atlas Iron are forecast to ship more than 275 million tonnes of iron ore this year, or 750,000 tonnes per day, through Port Hedland.

Iron ore prices stood at $151.90 a tonne, down slightly from $158.90 last Wednesday.

Rusty is the fourth cyclone to form during Australia's 2012-13 "cyclone season" which runs November to end April. There are typically 11 cyclones per season off Australia northwest and northeast coasts.

The weather bureau said the cyclone was mostly stationary overnight about 100 km (60 miles) off the coast, but was expected to track south during the day.

"This is a very long, drawn-out slow nightmare," Port Hedland town councilor Bill Dziombak told the Australian Associated Press.

Port Hedland is the largest town in the Pilbara, population 14,000, with the northwest outback on its doorstep and summer temperatures regularly around 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).

Residents have been warned to expect dangerously high storm tides and high waves along the coast. Those in low lying coastal areas had been evacuated, with local media reporting a run on emergency supplies such as water, batteries and flashlights.

Outback aboriginal communities were evacuated and isolated schools closed.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advised people to remain in the strongest part of their house.

"There'll be buildings that may be damaged, there may be loose tin, flying objects. Power may be down and there may be airborne hazards from asbestos or skeptics," said spokesman Phil Cribb.

A weaker category one system which passed the Pilbara in January forced the shutdown of all three iron ore export terminals, contributing to a nine percent drop in exports for the month and a 5.2 percent rise in spot prices.

Blueprint for an artificial brain: Scientists experiment with memristors that imitate natural nerves

Feb. 26, 2013 ? Scientists have long been dreaming about building a computer that would work like a brain. This is because a brain is far more energy-saving than a computer, it can learn by itself, and it doesn't need any programming. Privatdozent [senior lecturer] Dr. Andy Thomas from Bielefeld University's Faculty of Physics is experimenting with memristors -- electronic microcomponents that imitate natural nerves. Thomas and his colleagues have demonstrated that they could do this a year ago. They constructed a memristor that is capable of learning. Andy Thomas is now using his memristors as key components in a blueprint for an artificial brain.

He will be presenting his results at the beginning of March in the print edition of the Journal of Physics published by the Institute of Physics in London.

Memristors are made of fine nanolayers and can be used to connect electric circuits. For several years now, the memristor has been considered to be the electronic equivalent of the synapse. Synapses are, so to speak, the bridges across which nerve cells (neurons) contact each other. Their connections increase in strength the more often they are used. Usually, one nerve cell is connected to other nerve cells across thousands of synapses.

Like synapses, memristors learn from earlier impulses. In their case, these are electrical impulses that (as yet) do not come from nerve cells but from the electric circuits to which they are connected. The amount of current a memristor allows to pass depends on how strong the current was that flowed through it in the past and how long it was exposed to it.

Andy Thomas explains that because of their similarity to synapses, memristors are particularly suitable for building an artificial brain -- a new generation of computers. 'They allow us to construct extremely energy-efficient and robust processors that are able to learn by themselves.' Based on his own experiments and research findings from biology and physics, his article is the first to summarize which principles taken from nature need to be transferred to technological systems if such a neuromorphic (nerve like) computer is to function. Such principles are that memristors, just like synapses, have to 'note' earlier impulses, and that neurons react to an impulse only when it passes a certain threshold.

Thanks to these properties, synapses can be used to reconstruct the brain process responsible for learning, says Andy Thomas. He takes the classic psychological experiment with Pavlov's dog as an example. The experiment shows how you can link the natural reaction to a stimulus that elicits a reflex response with what is initially a neutral stimulus -- this is how learning takes place. If the dog sees food, it reacts by salivating. If the dog hears a bell ring every time it sees food, this neutral stimulus will become linked to the stimulus eliciting a reflex response. As a result, the dog will also salivate when it hears only the bell ringing and no food is in sight. The reason for this is that the nerve cells in the brain that transport the stimulus eliciting a reflex response have strong synaptic links with the nerve cells that trigger the reaction.

If the neutral bell-ringing stimulus is introduced at the same time as the food stimulus, the dog will learn. The control mechanism in the brain now assumes that the nerve cells transporting the neutral stimulus (bell ringing) are also responsible for the reaction -- the link between the actually 'neutral' nerve cell and the 'salivation' nerve cell also becomes stronger. This link can be trained by repeatedly bringing together the stimulus eliciting a reflex response and the neutral stimulus. 'You can also construct such a circuit with memristors -- this is a first step towards a neuromorphic processor,' says Andy Thomas.

'This is all possible because a memristor can store information more precisely than the bits on which previous computer processors have been based,' says Thomas. Both a memristor and a bit work with electrical impulses. However, a bit does not allow any fine adjustment -- it can only work with 'on' and 'off'. In contrast, a memristor can raise or lower its resistance continuously. 'This is how memristors deliver a basis for the gradual learning and forgetting of an artificial brain,' explains Thomas.

The Simple Secret to Time Management: Jedi Time Tricks

The Simple Secret to Time Management: Jedi Time TricksImagine you were a Jedi master called Bob (your parents, whilst skilled in the ways of the force weren't the best at choosing names). The love of your life?Princess Lucia?is trapped in a burning building as you hurry to save her.

You might think of Lucia as the embodiment of your dreams, your aspirations?she is your most important thing.

The Simple Secret to Time Management: Jedi Time Tricks

Unfortunately, before you can reach her an army of stormtroopers open fire. The incoming stream of lasers demand your attention?if you fail to dodge them, you're dead. You might think of them as an urgent distraction from saving your princess.

The Simple Secret to Time Management: Jedi Time Tricks

We all know how a hero resolves this dilemma. If he takes his eye off the ultimate goal?his princess?then all his other efforts are for nought. He can engage an army of stormtroopers, cutting them down with graceful ease, but their numbers are limitless, and whilst momentarily satisfying they only distract him. Delayed too long, his princess will die.

And so it is with your life. You have things that are most important and things that are most urgent in permanent competition:

The Simple Secret to Time Management: Jedi Time Tricks

The secret to mastering your time is to systematically focus on importance and suppress urgency. Humans are pre-wired to focus on things which demand an immediate response, like alerts on their phones?and to postpone things which are most important, like going to the gym. You need to reverse that, which goes against your brain and most of human society.

Look at what you spend your day doing. Most of it, I'll warrant, is not anything you chose?it's what is being asked of you. Here's how we fix that, young padawan:

Say no. Most of us follow an implicit social contract: when someone asks you to do something you almost always say yes. It may feel very noble, but don't forget there's a dying princess you need to save, and you just agreed to slow yourself down because you were asked nicely. You may need to sacrifice some social comfort to save a life (as a bonus, people tend to instinctively respect those who can say no).

Unplug the TV. I haven't had a TV signal for 7 years, which has given me about 12,376 hours more than the average American who indulges in 34 hours a week. I do watch some shows?usually one hour a day whilst eating dinner?but only ones I've chosen and bought. You can do a lot with 12,000 hours, and still keep up with Mad Men.

Kill notifications. Modern technology has evolved to exploit our urgency addiction: email, Facebook, Twitter, Quora and more will fight to distract you constantly. Fortunately, this is easily fixed: turn off all your notifications. Choose to check these things when you have time to be distracted?say, during a lunch break?and work through them together, saving time.

The Simple Secret to Time Management: Jedi Time Tricks

Schedule your priorities. Humans are such funny critters. If you have a friend to meet, you'll arrange to see them at a set time. But if you have something that matters to you more than anything?say writing a book, or going to the gym?you won't schedule it. You'll just ?get round to it'. Treat your highest priorities like flights you have to catch: give them a set time in advance and say no to anything that would stop you making your flight.

First things first. What is the single most important (not urgent) thing you could possibly be doing? Do some of that today. Remember there's a limitless number of distracting stormtroopers?don't fool yourself by thinking "if I just do this thing first then I can." Jedi don't live by excuses.

Less volume, more time. There's always millions of things you could be doing. The trick is to pick no more than 1-3 a day, and relentlessly pursue those. Your brain won't like this limit. Other people won't like this limit. Do it anyway. Focusing your all on one task at a time is infinitely more efficient than multi-tasking and gives you time to excel at your work.

Ignore. It's rude, unprofessional, and often utterly necessary. There are people you won't find time to reply to. There are requests you will allow yourself to forget. You can be slow to do things like tidy up, pay bills, or open mail. The world won't fall apart. The payoff is you get done what matters.

One final lesson from the Jedi: they're heroes.

Heroes inspire us for many reasons: they make tough decisions, they keep going and they get done what matters. But there's another reason we love our heroes. Inside us all, we know we have the power to become one ourselves.

GM selects AT&T LTE for future car connectivity

AT&T 4G LTE

AT&T and General Motors have just announced plans to bring LTE to a wide range of its cars starting in 2014. The partnership will enable GM to provide a whole host of new connected car services through its subsidiary, OnStar, across models from Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. The connectivity will be built in at a basic level of the car, integrated into the electrical system and wired to an external antenna to provide better coverage and speeds. Some car models -- usually in the higher end -- have had this functionality for some time, but not on the wide scale that GM is targeting.

GM envisions streaming media content available in back seat entertainment devices, real-time navigation updates and application downloads for infotainment systems. The embedded LTE connection will not only bring a whole host of integrated car services online, but also provide Wifi hotspot functionality for other devices that users bring with them to the car. Hopefully as this service hits the main stream other car makers can follow suit.

Custom Timer Jobs of Copying List Items to Database using Entity Framework

In this article we can try creating a custom Timer Job in SharePoint.? The tools we are going to use are following:

?? Visual Studio 2010
?? SharePoint DevTools from CodePlex

We can start with analysing what is a Timer Job.

What is a Timer Job?

A Timer Job is a periodically executed task inside the SharePoint Server.? It allows us by providing a task execution environment.

For example we can execute tasks like: Sending Emails on every hour, Data Updating on every day, creation of reports on every week etc.

Default Timer Jobs inside SharePoint

There are many Timer Jobs inside SharePoint which do the internal tasks like:
?? Sending emails
?? Validating sites
?? Delete unused sites
?? Health analysis
?? Product versioning
?? Diagnostics
These tasks will be having execution periods like:
1.? Minute
2.? Hour
3.? Day
4.? Week
5.? Month

Manage Timer Jobs

You can see the Timer Jobs from Central Administration > Monitoring > Manager Timer Jobs

Following is the list of some Timer Job Definitions:

You can select each Job Definition and change the schedule or disable it.

Creating a Custom Timer Job Definition

Now we are ready with the basics to proceed with creating a Custom Timer Job.

Scenario

We have a list named Products which is custom template.? Any new product arriving has to be posted to an SQL Server database so that the company website can show it to potential customers.

So the activities involved are the following:

1.? Create Products List inside SharePoint
2.? Create Product Table inside Database
3.? Create the Timer Job Definition
4.? Create Event Receiver
5.? Create the Database Insert Method
6.? Deploy the Timer Job
7.? View the Results

Step 1: Create Products List inside SharePoint

Here is the List Definition: (the list template with data is attached with the article)

You can see that the core columns of the list are:

Column
Description
Title
The name of the Product
Description
About the Product
Price
The price of the Product

The HasPosted column determines whether the item is copied to the Products database.?

After installing the list from template you will can see it is having 2 items:

Step 2: Create Product Table inside Database

Now we need to create the destination database and table.? Following is the table definition.? (the table sql is attached with the article)

Step 3: Create the Timer Job

In this step we can go ahead and create the Timer Job.? For this you require Visual Studio 2010 and the SharePoint templates installed.

Open Visual Studio and create a new Empty SharePoint Project as shown below:

In the next page select your server and use Deploy as Farm solution option:

Click the Finish button after entering the options.

Now add a new class and derive it from SPJobDefinition as shown below.

using System;
 using System.Collections.Generic;
 using System.Linq;
 using System.Text;
 using Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration;

 namespace SPTimerJobExample
 {
     public class ProductsJobDefinition : SPJobDefinition
     {
     }
 }

Now replace the above file with the following content.

using System;
 using System.Collections.Generic;
 using System.Linq;
 using System.Text;
 using Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration;
 using Microsoft.SharePoint;

 namespace SPTimerJobExample
 {
     public class ProductsTimerJob : SPJobDefinition
     {
         public ProductsTimerJob()
             : base()
         {

         }

         public ProductsTimerJob(string jobName, SPService service, SPServer server, SPJobLockType lockType)
             : base(jobName, service, server, lockType)
         {
             this.Title = "Products Timer Job";
         }

         public ProductsTimerJob(string jobName, SPWebApplication webapp)
             : base(jobName, webapp, null, SPJobLockType.ContentDatabase)
         {
             this.Title = "Products Timer Job";
         }

         public override void Execute(Guid targetInstanceId)
         {
             SPWebApplication webapp = this.Parent as SPWebApplication;
             SPContentDatabase contentDb = webapp.ContentDatabases[targetInstanceId];

             SPList list = contentDb.Sites[0].RootWeb.Lists["Products"];

             CopyItems(list);
         }

         private void CopyItems(SPList list)
         {
             foreach (SPListItem item in list.Items)
             {
                 bool hasPosted = (bool)item["HasPosted"];

                 if (!hasPosted)
                 {
                     new DbManager().Insert(item);

                     item["HasPosted"] = true;
                     item.Update();
                 }
             }
         }
     }
 }

The above code is performing the following activities:

1.? Get the list of items from Products where HasPosted is false
2.? Insert the Product into Database
3.? Mark the item HasPosted to true

We need to include the DbManager class file and will be done in the upcoming step.

Step 4: Create Event Receiver

Now we have to create an event receiver which performs the installation or uninstallation of the Job Definiton.

In the Solution Explorer right click on Feature and use the Add Feature item.

In the appearing dialog change the title to Products Job Definition and the Scope to Site

Now right click on the Solution Explorer > Feature 1 and click Add Event Receiver

Inside the class content of Feature1.EventReceiver.cs place the following code.

??

 const string JobName = "Products Timer Job";

         public override void FeatureActivated(SPFeatureReceiverProperties properties)
         {
             SPSite site = properties.Feature.Parent as SPSite;

             DeleteJob(site); // Delete Job if already Exists

             CreateJob(site); // Create new Job
         }

         private static void DeleteJob(SPSite site)
         {
             foreach (SPJobDefinition job in site.WebApplication.JobDefinitions)
                if (job.Name == JobName)
                     job.Delete();
         }

         private static void CreateJob(SPSite site)
         {
             ProductsTimerJob job = new ProductsTimerJob(JobName, site.WebApplication);

             SPMinuteSchedule schedule = new SPMinuteSchedule();
             schedule.BeginSecond = 0;
             schedule.EndSecond = 5;
             schedule.Interval = 5;

             job.Schedule = schedule;
             job.Update();
         }

         public override void FeatureDeactivating(SPFeatureReceiverProperties properties)
         {
             DeleteJob(properties.Feature.Parent as SPSite); // Delete the Job
         }

You need to add the using as well:

using Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration;

Step 5: Create the Database Insert Method

In this step we can complete the DbManager class file.? Here we are using Entity Framework associated with .Net 3.5 version.

For this add a new Entity Data Model into the project and map to the Product table which we have created in previous step.

Now create a class file named DbManage.cs and replace it with the following content.

using System;

 namespace SPTimerJobExample
 {
     public class DbManager
     {
         public void Insert(Microsoft.SharePoint.SPListItem item)
         {
             using (ProductionModel context = new ProductionModel(GetConnectionString()))
             {
                 Product product = new Product();
                 product.Title = item["Title"].ToString();
                 product.Description = item["Description"].ToString();
                 product.Url = item["Url"].ToString();
                 product.Price = (double)item["Price"];
                 product.PostedOn = DateTime.Today;

                 context.AddToProducts(product);

                 context.SaveChanges();
             }
         }

         public string GetConnectionString()
         {
             string connectionString = new System.Data.EntityClient.EntityConnectionStringBuilder
             {
                 Metadata = "res://*",
                 Provider = "System.Data.SqlClient",
                 ProviderConnectionString = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnectionStringBuilder
                 {
                     InitialCatalog = "YOUR-DB-NAME-HERE",
                     DataSource = @"YOUR-SERVER-NAME-HERE",
                     IntegratedSecurity = false,
                     UserID = "YOUR-USER-ID-HERE",
                     Password = "YOUR-PASSWORD-HERE",
                 }.ConnectionString
             }.ConnectionString;

             return connectionString;
         }
     }
 }

The above code contains the Insert() method to insert new record into the Product table.

For the time being I am hard coding the connection string.? You need to specify the correct user credentials in the GetConnectionString() method.

Note: Please note that the connection string is loaded from the executing application's configuration file.? In the case of Timer Jobs the configuration file will be OWSTIMER.exe.config residing in the 14hive folder.

Step 6: Deploy the Timer Job

Now we are ready to deploy the Timer Job into the SharePoint Site.? For this right click on the solution and click the Deploy option.

If you get the Deploy Succeeded message we are good.

Step 7: View the Results

Now we can go to the Central Administration to see our Timer Job.? For this open Central Administration web site and go to Monitoring > Review Job Definitions

On clicking the Review Job Definitions link you can see our item as shown below:

Click on the item and in the appearing page click the button Run Now

You can see that the Timer Job is set for 5 Minutes according to our code.

Now we can go back to the Products list and see that the HasPosted is set to True.

Going to the SQL Server Table we can see both the records are inserted there.

?

Troubleshooting Tips

While developing timer jobs, you might need to delete the assembly and feature as well.? Please note the following points for troubleshooting guidance:

?? Features are deployed to the 14hive folder
?? The assembly gets deployed to GAC folder
?? You can use RETRACT option from? Visual Studio
?? You can use GACUTIL to uninstall the assembly
?? You can remove the Feature from 14hive folder

For troubleshooting the Farm Solutions or User Solutions you can use:

?? Central Administration > System Settings > Manage Farm Solutions
?? Central Administration > System Settings > Manage User Solutions

You can Retract or undo the last Retract schedule there.

For checking the Job Status or History you can use:

?? Central Administration > Monitoring >? Check Job Status > Timer Job Status
?? Central Administration > Monitoring >? Check Job Status >? Timer Job History

These screens will show the Success / Failure status of the jobs and any errors associated.? For example an invalid connection string problem is identified as shown below:

Debugging Tips

In some cases the Timer Service hold the old version of assembly.? So the new changes you have done through Visual Studio may not get reflect immediately.? You can change the assembly version and view the GAC to ensure the correct version was deployed.

Plus you can restart the SharePoint 2010 Timer Service from services.msc

Note: In the case of Integrated Security as True in connection strings, the authenticated user would be the Service Account user assigned in the service.

Former UN chief says violence could mar Kenya vote

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? The former head of the U.N. ? the man who helped save Kenya from spiraling deeper into election violence five years ago ? warned Saturday that intimidation, ethnic rivalry and violence could undermine Kenya's March 4 presidential vote.

Kofi Annan said that Kenya is on a positive trajectory five years after postelection violence killed more than 1,000 people and forced some 600,000 from their homes. But he reminded Kenyans that their country stood on the "precipice of self-destruction" after the country's last vote.

"The elections must be peaceful, free and fair. They must be conducted in accordance with the rule of law. They must be carried out with integrity, and must reflect the will of the people. Only then will national unity, stability and cohesion be safeguarded," Annan said in a statement.

"Yet, intimidation, electoral violence and ethnic rivalry have the potential to undermine and jeopardize the whole process," he added. "And that is why recent violent events and increasing tensions in the run-up to the elections are deeply worrying. Kenya cannot risk a return to those dark days."

Annan in early 2008 helped broker a political deal between the top two contenders for president. That deal saw Mwai Kibaki remain president and challenger Raila Odinga become prime minister. Kibaki is not running this year because of term limits; Odinga is one of two top contenders for president.

Annan told Kenyans in his statement that elections should not be viewed as a winner-take-all competition. He noted that Kenya has a new constitution and an improved judiciary, and he said the results of free and fair elections must be respected, and disputes settled through the courts.

Annan had been making regular trips to meet with top officials in Kenya in the hopes of helping avoid election violence, but the former U.N. chief has not visited in several months because some Kenyan leaders began to see those visits as outside meddling

The March 4 vote sees a raft of local, regional and national level races. But unless Odinga or his top challenger Uhuru Kenyatta wins at least 50 percent of the vote, a run-off for president will be held, likely sometime in April. That vote holds even more potential for violence than the March 4 ballot, according to analysts.

Complicating this year's vote, Kenyatta faces charges at the International Criminal Court over allegations he helped orchestrate the 2007-08 election violence. Kenyatta and his running mate, William Ruto, are both due to attend a session at the ICC in mid-April, potentially right in the middle of the campaign for the second-round presidential vote. If Kenyatta and Ruto win, Kenya could face a situation where the country's president and vice president must attend court sessions at The Hague while running the country.

The United States, France and Switzerland have said that their relations with Kenya are likely to change if Kenyatta is elected, because of the charges he faces at the ICC.

Kenya's elections are the most complex the country has ever faced, according to a report released Saturday by the London think tank Chatham House. The ICC indictments of Kenyatta and Ruto have boosted their popularity among parts of the Kenyan electorate, said the report, but it added that the timings of the upcoming trials would "severely impede" the ability of the two to carry out their duties they were to win. The ICC court hearings could last several years.

The report concluded: "A more negative impact of the ICC's involvement is the way that it has raised the stakes of winning and losing the 2013 elections, and has contributed to the division of Kenyan voters into two opposing camps characterized by a strong ethnic logic."

Increasing evidence links high glycemic index foods and dairy products to acne

Thursday, February 21, 2013

A study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has determined that there is increasing evidence of a connection between diet and acne, particularly from high glycemic load diets and dairy products, and that medical nutrition therapy (MNT) can play an important role in acne treatment.

More than 17 million Americans suffer from acne, mostly during their adolescent and young adult years. Acne influences quality of life, including social withdrawal, anxiety, and depression, making treatment essential. Since the late 1800s, research has linked diet to this common disease, identifying chocolate, sugar, and fat as particular culprits, but beginning in the 1960s, studies disassociated diet from the development of acne.

"This change occurred largely because of the results of two important research studies that are repeatedly cited in the literature and popular culture as evidence to refute the association between diet and acne," says Jennifer Burris, MS, RD, of the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, New York University. "More recently, dermatologists and registered dietitians have revisited the diet-acne relationship and become increasingly interested in the role of medical nutritional therapy in acne treatment."

Burris and colleagues, William Rietkerk, Department of Dermatology, New York Medical College, and Kathleen Woolf, of New York University's Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health, conducted a literature review to evaluate evidence for the diet-acne connection during three distinctive time periods: early history, the rise of the diet-acne myth, and recent research.

Culling information from studies between 1960 and 2012 that investigated diet and acne, investigators compiled data for a number of study characteristics, including reference, design, participants, intervention method, primary outcome, results and conclusions, covariate considerations, and limitations.

They concluded that a high glycemic index/glycemic load diet and frequent dairy consumption are the leading factors in establishing the link between diet and acne. They also note that although research results from studies conducted over the last 10 years do not demonstrate that diet causes acne, it may influence or aggravate it.

The study team recommends that dermatologists and registered dietitians work collaboratively to design and conduct quality research. "This research is necessary to fully elucidate preliminary results, determine the proposed underlying mechanisms linking diet and acne, and develop potential dietary interventions for acne treatment," says Burris. "The medical community should not dismiss the possibility of diet therapy as an adjunct treatment for acne. At this time, the best approach is to address each acne patient individually, carefully considering the possibility of dietary counseling."

Researchers 'nanoweld' by applying light to aligned nanorods in solid materials

Feb. 21, 2013 ? Researchers from North Carolina State University have developed a way to melt or "weld" specific portions of polymers by embedding aligned nanoparticles within the materials. Their technique, which melts fibers along a chosen direction within a material, may lead to stronger, more resilient nanofibers and materials.

Physicists Jason Bochinski and Laura Clarke, with materials scientist Joe Tracy, placed specifically aligned gold nanorods within a solid material. Gold nanorods absorb light at different wavelengths, depending upon the size and orientation of the nanorod, and then they convert that absorbed light directly into heat. In this case, the nanorods were designed to respond to light wavelengths of 520 nanometers (nm) in a horizontal alignment and 800 nm when vertically aligned. Human beings can see light at 520 nm (it looks green), while 808 nm is in the near infrared spectrum, invisible to our eyes.

When the different wavelengths of light were applied to the material, they melted the fibers along the chosen directions, while leaving surrounding fibers largely intact.

"Being able to heat materials spatially in this way gives us the ability to manipulate very specific portions of these materials, because nanorods localize heat -- that is, the heat they produce only affects the nanorod and its immediate surroundings," Tracy says.

According to Bochinski, the work also has implications for optimizing materials that have already been manufactured: "We can use heat at the nanoscale to change mechanical characteristics of objects postproduction without affecting their physical properties, which means more efficiency and less waste."

The researchers' findings appear in Particle & Particle Systems Characterization. The work was funded by grants from the National Science Foundation and Sigma Xi. Graduate students Wei-Chen Wu and Somsubhra Maity and former undergraduate student Krystian Kozek contributed to the work.

Canon Pixma MG5420 Wireless Photo All-In-One Printer

Similar in many ways to the Canon Pixma MG4220 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-in-One, the Canon Pixma MG5420 Wireless Photo All-In-One Printer starts with essentially the same strengths, including better than average text quality for an inkjet multi-function printer (MFP), and then builds on them to offer a substantially more capable printer for only a little more money. In particular, it offers better photo quality and the ability to print on optical discs. The combination, plus the unusually high quality text, makes it a good fit for home, home office, or both.

Like the MG4220, the MG5420 is best understood as a home-oriented MFP that can also serve for light-duty use in a home office. However, it lacks some important office-centric features, with no fax capability and no automatic document feeder (ADF), which means its letter-size flatbed sets the limit for the maximum paper size for scanning. It also lacks wired network support, offering only Wi-Fi for a network connection.

Basic MFP features are limited to printing, scanning, and copying. Additional features include scanning directly to or printing from a memory card, including printing directly from a memory card to a printable optical disc. You can also preview images on memory cards with the 3.0-inch color display before printing.

Paper handling is relatively meager. The 125-sheet input capacity is a bit more than the MG4220 offers, but still suitable only for light-duty use even in a home office. One small plus is a second tray for photos only, which can hold up to 20 sheets of 4 by 6 photo paper to let you print photos without having to swap out the paper in the main tray. Also very much on the plus side is a built-in duplexer (for two-sided printing), which also works for two-sided copying. With no ADF, however, placing and turning over pages on the flatbed is a strictly manual task.

Setup and Speed
I ran my tests using a USB connection to a system running Windows Vista. Setup was standard, but with one annoying hiccough. The printer refused to print the automatic alignment page the first two times I tried, showing an unhelpful error code on the front panel LCD and telling me to try again. After I turned the printer off, then on again, the alignment page printed, and I had no other problems. I'd be a lot more comfortable with this issue if the error message had told me something useful. However, once I got past setup, everything worked well enough.

Canon Pixma MG5420 Wireless Photo All-In-One Printer

The best that can be said for the MG5420's speed is that it's not sluggish enough to count as a serious problem. I timed the printer on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at an effective 2.5 pages per minute (ppm).

That makes it a bit faster than the MG4220, at 2.1 ppm, but notably slower than the similarly priced Editors' Choice Epson WorkForce WF-3520 at 4.4 ppm or the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J825DW , at 4.0 ppm. Also helping is that it scored better for photo speed. The 1 minute 4 second average for a 4 by 6 makes it a few seconds faster per photo than the WF-3520 and almost a minute faster than the MFC-J825DW.

Quality and Other Issues
Whatever the MG5420 loses for speed, it makes up for with output quality that's easily above par overall, with typical graphics quality for an inkjet MFP and notably better text and photo quality than most. Edges on text characters aren't quite as crisp as you'd get from a laser, but the text is much more readable at small font sizes than text from most inkjets, and it's easily good enough for any business use short of desktop publishing.

Graphics quality is at the high end of the range where most inkjet MFPs fall, making it easily good enough for any internal business use, including PowerPoint handouts. Depending on how much of a perfectionist you are, you may consider it suitable for output going to an important client or customer. Photo quality is notably better than most inkjet MFPs can deliver, and better than you'll get from many drug store photos.

One minor issue for the MG5420 is that although it comes with a program for printing on optical discs, it's not obvious where to find the command for printing discs in the program. However, the information is in the onscreen manual, so it's not all that hard to find. One other feature worth mention is mobile printing, including support for AirPrint and for printing through the cloud. To use mobile printing, however, you have to connect the printer to a network by Wi-Fi, since the printer doesn't offer Ethernet.

The best argument for considering this printer is its output quality. Few inkjet MFPs can match it for text quality, which makes it a good choice for light-duty home office use, and few can match it for photo quality, which makes it a great choice for home use. Add in the reasonably good graphics quality and the acceptable, if not impressive, speed, plus the ability to print from and scan to a memory card as well as print on a disc, and the Canon Pixma MG5420 Wireless Photo All-In-One Printer can be an attractive choice for home, office, or the dual role of home and home office MFP.

PlayStation 4 supports remote play on PlayStation Vita

PlayStation 4 supports remote play on PlayStation Vita

Sony is eking more out of its Gaikai acquisition than we thought -- it's using the streaming game technology to allow for remote play on the PlayStation Vita, advancing what we saw with the PS3. From a brief demo on stage, the company showed gameplay of the PS4 title Knack on the Vita with little apparent degradation in the visual quality -- it's not leaning on the smaller system's processing, after all. There was also a hint that remote play might not be exclusive, although there's nothing specific in this regard. Not every game will support remote play, either, so don't expect it to be a ubiquitous feature -- but it may help justify the Vita as a companion.

Check out our liveblog of Sony's event to get the latest news as it happens!
